Introducing Burel Heirloom-Quality Wool Blankets

The journey of every Burel blanket begins high in the mountains of Portugal, with the careful shearing and initial processing of pure wool. This is where the magic starts.

1. Preparation and Carding: The wool arrives in dense bales, where it is opened, softened, and blended to create a uniform color and texture. Our artisans use century-old Belgian carding machines to straighten and align the fibers, creating a delicate "wick" that sets the stage for what's to come.
2. The Spin: The wicks are then spun with precision, twisting and stretching the wool into durable yarn of the perfect thickness, ready for weaving.
3. Artisan Weaving: Using traditional looms, the spun yarn is expertly woven into a strong, initial fabric known as "xerga." Each piece is carefully inspected by hand to ensure perfection before it moves on to the final, transformative stage.
4. The "Miracle" of Finishing: This is the most crucial step, where the xerga is moistened with hot water and subjected to a special felting process. This causes the fabric to naturally shrink by 30-40%, resulting in the dense, soft, and unbelievably durable Burel fabric we love.
